Ukraine Fatigue —Are We Suffering from it yet?
Back in the summer of 2022, I attended a Prague Security Studies Institute summer school in collaboration with NATO.
One of the many issues we discussed with leading experts on Russia is that many in the West have become fatigued with constant news of Ukraine.
Like many of you, when the war broke out, I became obsessed with the news cycle. I took books from the library on Putin, read biographies, listened to a few podcasts on the conflict daily, and couldn’t stop watching DW News.
But today, it seems that many are getting tired of focusing on Ukraine. So, it’s fair to ask, is the West fatigued yet?
I lived in Warsaw over the summer, a city with the most Ukrainian refugees (with the population rising by more than 17% at certain junctures during the war), and I can tell you, it was clear from living there that Ukraine was front and center in Polish affairs.
Presently, some Europeans have shown once again that they care for Ukrainians with their votes.
In the recent Czech election for president, for example, the populist anti-NATO Andrej Babis ran against the former NATO general (and correspondingly pro-NATO), Petr Pavel.
Fortunately for democracy in the Czech Republic, Pavel won.
