Tucker Carlson is Finally Fired —But He’s Not Going Away Just Yet
--
On April 24 2023, Tucker Carlson was fired from his famous slot on Fox News, titled “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
Millions watched him every night, thus granting him a huge influence over what millions in the US thought about American domestic politics as well as foreign policy.
In large part, we can credit Tucker for bolstering narratives around the (in reality, non-existent) culture wars, spreading and exacerbating political divisions in US society — and the world.
We’re better without him but that doesn’t mean he’s gone just yet.
Let me explain.
For those of you who might not be aware, Carlson is an American right-wing political commentator and TV personality who has for years now been among the most prominent pundits for Fox News.
But let’s be honest, because of Carlson’s controversial opinions and statements, most of us have indeed not only heard of him, but can’t stop hearing about him.
This comes with a lot of problems.
Historically, Tucker has extensively flirted with white nationalist and white supremacist ideologies. In 2018, he went so far to say that the US is “dirtier” by accepting immigrants and that allowing them into the country was making it “poorer.”
He has also been criticized for minimizing the impact of racism in America and promoting conspiracy theories, such as those related to COVID-19 vaccines and the 2020 US presidential election.
But he wasn’t fired for any of these moral blunders.
The game of Fox News is to capture the attention of its audience — and the best way to do that is to keep them outraged.
No, Carlson was fired because of the many lawsuits filed against him that complain about the toxic workplace environment he creates as well as sexist remarks.
What is Fox Saying?
Supposedly, the owner of Fox, Rupert Murdoch, has made the final call on Carlson’s departure. There is speculation that Murdoch also made the decision because Carlson thought (and is on record for saying) that he was untouchable at Fox.
