The Perils of Netanyahu’s Israel & The Dangerous Weaponization of “Antisemitism”
The news out of Israel-Palestine — and the region more broadly — continues to cause headaches and deep nihilism over human nature.
The recent assassinations of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Lebanon are just the latest headlines. Even if the assassinations bolster Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s domestic popularity (which some polls are suggesting, but are not definitive), he is still deeply unpopular — and one of the primary reasons why Israeli hostages have still not been returned.
Israelis face a difficult challenge with Hamas on its doorstep, but Netanyahu’s response has been exceptionally detrimental. It has destabilized the Middle East, stalled normalization talks, devastated Gaza, drawn criticism from Putin towards the US, significantly turned public opinion against Israel, and led to clashes with Iran, among other disastrous outcomes.
The perplexity here is that Israel does have legitimate security concerns. That said, Netanyahu’s collateral damage calculus in Palestine is unacceptable — and it endangers Israel’s existence.
There’s still time to avert this, if Netanyahu steps down and grants the immediate ceasefire and release of hostages.
