I do believe that people scrutinize communism fairly heavily actually. But it depends on who you listen to. Very few say that capitalism is without its own merit. But, yes, you are right, Communist ideology was fairly popular in the 20th century. Today, communism is less prevalent and often gets distorted with dictatorial regimes, something that Marx, for example, would be opposed to.
