Some great points raised, although I wonder if it could primarily be distilled to ignorance. For example, studies by cognitive psychologists have shown that there is no direct correlation between believing something and having evidence for it. We see this for those who accept climate science or believe in vaccines; rarely will they know how to defend them. Of course, the opposite is true as well. When people disagree with these issues, they are rarely able to summarize what exactly they disagree with.
So, the human animal is complex.
