Should Ukraine Be Allowed to Target Deep Within Russia?
Many of us have been disappointed with how slow the international order has been in supplying Ukraine the necessary weapons to repel the Russian invador from Ukraine.
We have also been critical of the restrictions the West (or Global North, more precisely) puts on Ukraine when it comes to using the weapons it chooses to provide.
Granted, under international humanitarian law, countries involved in conflict must clearly distinguish between military targets and civilian objects, and any attack must be proportionate.
That said, consistent Russian strikes continue to terrorize Ukrainian civilians leading to hundreds dead — the most recent of which was aarlier this month of a children’s hospital in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
Ukraine has claimed that it needs to defend itself against Russian strikes by taking out the infrastructure deep within Russia. It is entirely legitimate morally — and under international law — to strike these targets.
So, why is the West so slow?
On his trip the UK, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step up and help lift the restrictions on how Ukraine can use weapons from its Western allies.
