Russian War on Ukraine vs US Invasion of Iraq — Are They Really the Same?
In this post, I’ll be addressing a comment that has gained some attention since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and more recently in 2022, with the launch of his large-scale invasion across much of Ukrainian territory.
It’s a topic that continues to come up, so I thought it was about time I briefly addressed it 550 blog posts into my Medium journey.
In my view, it’s fairly clear that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is of a different kind than the US invasion of Iraq or Afghanistan. Let me explain.
There has been quite a bit of disinformation coming from Russia since Putin’s full-scale invasion. It’s not new. It’s been with us for some time. And in recent years, since at least 2016, there’s been a noticeable increase of it, to the extent that Russian disinformation was traced in the Brexit referendum as well as the French and German elections in 2017.
There’s probably some of it on this platform as well.
This may include messaging like, “Russia is the aggressor, but is the US/NATO any better?” It is then often followed up with photo collages of US or NATO military involvement in conflicts in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and so forth.
