Another day, another low point for Russia. After the bombing of the Crimean Bridge (also known as the Kerch Bridge), on Monday 17th of July 2023, Russia announced it will be pulling out of the Black Sea Grain Deal.

The Deal was meant to guarantee safe access from Ukrainian ports across the Black Sea because of the devastating food shortages the war was causing in the Global South.

Because of this termination, there is no guarantee and millions will once again face food shortages.

Let me explain.

“There is simply too much at stake in a hungry and hurting world.” — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

Originally, the Black Sea Grain Deal was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey a year ago. It was extended several times and was set to expire today. Russia did not extend the Deal further.

However, Russia said that its decision was final. It seems they are truly running out of options in Ukraine. Any threat will do — even if the threat will put millions at risk of starvation.

The UN said Moscow’s announcement would “strike a blow to people in need everywhere.”
