Putin Was Supposed to Be Democratic

When Vladimir Putin arrived in the Kremlin, he was supposed to be the unsuspecting hero of the liberal international order.

Following Boris Yeltsin’s tumultuous rule, Putin promised Russians that he would get rid of his predecessor’s lazy governance which allowed for oligarchs and the Russian to take over the country.

At the same time, Putin promised the democratic world that Russia would once more become a global power but with a democratic twist…
