Bad news from Slovakia, my friends. The fears that 3x-Prime Minister, Robert Fico, will be able to form a coalition have been actualized.

I provide some context for this election in my blog post, titled “Will Slovaks Turn Against Ukraine?” This will be a shorter piece. Here, I will primarily focus on the coalition partners Fico was negotiating with. Lastly, I will try to provide a brief explanation for why this happened.

In sum, here is the significance of this election:

Fico’s election has undermined EU support for Ukraine; it has added to the pressure coming from the Hungarian PM, Viktor Orban; and it has shown that public opinion is turning against Ukrainians in parts of Europe.

All very bad news for those of us in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and right to defend themselves against the Russian invaders.

On the 30th of September, 2023, Slovakia held its parliamentary election. The country saw its largest turnout since 2002, with 68% of the population participating in the elections.

Many saw this as another turning point in Slovakian politics, similar to 2018, when Fico was originally ousted for charges of corruption.
