Partying in Kyiv, While Hundreds Die on the Frontline? — On the Ethics of Enjoying Life in War

Due to the success of some Instagram Reels and Tik-Toks, portraying Ukrainians partying in Kyiv and other big cities in Ukraine, like Odesa, Lviv, and Kharkiv, some have turned to social media to criticize young Ukrainians.

“How dare they party when hundreds of Ukrainians die daily on the frontlines?”

The irony is that hundreds of thousands have died for the freedom these grumps live for. In the First World War, the Second World War, and countless other conflicts, millions died for freedom.

Ukrainians are simply following in that legacy.

Let’s discuss.

It’s true that Ukrainians across the country are enjoying life as much as they can. Many others are dying, including civilians.

Elsewhere in Europe — and the world — where Ukrainians took refuge from the war, they also participate in what society offers. That means they attend parties; they go on dates; they get married; they have children.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Some people do not understand how people can go on dates, when their family members are on the frontline. They’ve never been in that situation, perhaps. And, to be frank, neither have I.
