Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022, Russia has bombed Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, more than 800 times.

At large, Russia bombs Ukraine with approximately 60,000 strikes per day. That would mean that Russia dropped 21 million shells on Ukraine in the past year.

Drone warfare has been transformative in this conflict, with Ukrainians utilizing cheap drones in order to prevent their hacking by the Russian side.

But what’s the point of all this? Why is Russia indiscriminately targeting civilians?

Let me explain.

We have heard it all before now. And Ukrainians have had to live with it.

A pregnant woman killed on a walk in the park.

A boy on his way home from school hit by a random missile strike whose purpose was far from its target.

A couple killed in a car on their way to do some grocery shopping.

This is Ukraine.

In one part of the city, they sit at a cafe; in the next, a mother is crying over the dead body of her child.

In many ways, it’s impossible to make complete sense of Putin’s artillery strikes precisely because they are so illogical.
