Maybe You Should Be Watched — A Brief Argument for Surveillance

Privacy is a fundamental human right as conveyed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) under Article 12.

The European Union provides legal reasons for privacy rights such as Article 7 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (CFR) which maintains the rights for private and family life, home, and communications.

Article 7 of the CFR guarantees the right to the protection of personal data. Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) guarantees the same.

Despite these declarations, privacy has not been prioritized or guaranteed. And I believe some of that is justifiable. In fact, there is a valid argument for some surveillance. Let me explain.

Facebook, Amazon, and Instagram have used the data of their users in order to target advertisements without hesitation. Some argue that they wish for ads that are directed at them individually and thus do not mind blatant advertising.

The alternative, they claim, are advertisements that are in no particular way related to their lives. At least they are receiving deals on products that they have an interest in.

Many suggest that they personally have nothing to hide from the government and are unhinged by the fact that they are being monitored at…
