It’s a difficult balance to strike — one that the EU is arguably falling short of, either way, you are right.

One of the more obvious ways your point is true is in how COVID-19 vaccines were handed out (or not handed out) to the Global South. This could have arguably been handled much better.

But, once again, it seems like a difficult balance to strike. Many domestic EU citizens are increasingly frustrated with their economic hardships, which leads to populist demagogues creating persuasive political campaigns for a lot of voters.

And then the question is, what would we prefer? Politicians who align with us ideologically but prioritize (let’s make up a number) 70% domestic concerns and 30% foreign assistance, or politicians who go 100% “America First,” prioritizing complete self-interest?

I think that’s the question we have to grapple with.
