Iran Fires 200 Missiles at Israel After Israeli Damascus Attack — On The Need to De-escalate in the Middle East

On April 1, Israel’s bombing of an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus killed a senior commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps including some Iranian officials and at least four Syrian non-combatants. Most of all, it escalated the Israel-Palestine conflict, as we have now seen from Iran’s retaliation against Israel.

As many other commentators have noted, the Israeli strike was a serious escalation in an already disastrous Israeli military response against Hamas’ October 7 terrorism. The stated aim, to destroy Hamas, was unachievable from the outset. Hamas is an idea and is thus incapable of defeat with any military solution. In fact, the idea of Hamas hinges on Israeli violence against Palestinians (no matter the justification).

It is now abundantly clear, for those who might have doubted it in the first week of Hamas’ terrorist attack, that it is time for a permanent ceasefire before there is no coming back from further escalations. International order depends on it.
