Yes, that’s true. Actually, my thesis work at McGill is on the emergence of democracy in East Central Europe after 1989. And there’s so much there to look into. People mobilized and organized themselves for many reasons, but an overarching one was to topple authoritarianism. Belarus and Russia might just be up next in that effort some 30 years later.
