In a sense, Crimea was “lost” to Ukraine; but it was never meant to be theirs in the first place. So, it doesn’t really matter. I really think it’s like saying that Russia lost Alaska to the US from the perspective of indigenous tribes. Yes, but there were others who claimed that land before you.
