I think you raise some good points, which shows how difficult this issue really is. There are many nuances that a person has to be able to entertain at the same time in my view. That said, we still things very differently on this topic and that's very understandable.
To your first and second point, that still does not solve the issue of using 2,000-lb bombs. There are other bombs to my knowledge that are equipped to target underground tunnels without causing huge blasts. So, we have to be able to doubt the intentions there.
I am also not so persuaded by the argument that "Hamas is causing all of this." It seems to me to rely on similar reasoning that manipulators use when justifying domestic violence. Of course, the analogy is not perfect but the premise is the same. Restraint is always an option. Israel can choose to use weapons that do less damage. They can also do more to show justifications for Hamas targeting. That's all difficult, but it's the standard set by international law. Think of U.S. military targets recently and the restraint they chose to show after the killing of U.S. military personnel. Furthermore, top Hamas leadership is not even in Gaza. They can level Gaza and Hamas will still not be defeated.
Also, telling people to leave an area and then leveling it without providing any long-term strategy of rebuilding really isn't giving the people there anything to be thankful for. right. They will still be radicalized. Support for Hamas is directly correlated with these bombings. And Netanyahu has gone on record so many times saying that he prefers Hamas leadership in Gaza because it legitimizes them not taking a two state solution seriously.
That's all only to say that this issue is complex. I absolutely understand why you take this position. There will always be disagreement here.
I wouldn't want you to respond to all of this because I really think that we have to agree to disagree. The main claim I would want to have your opinion on is Palestinians being radicalized from this. I mean, in what world would they not be radicalized?
I would also want to hear your thoughts on this article. It's some of the best writing I've read on the topic. Thanks again for the exchange. Wishing you the best.
