Yes, not only Brits don't know who they are. I would say they are relatively unknown to most -- even students of history.

As you are touching on in your comment, the history of the region is quite fascinating. But I am sure the same is true about your part of Poland. And, indeed, Polish history is also endlessly fascinating as well :)
