I have lived in Barcelona and from conversations with some of locals I would say that there an ethnic/linguistic component to it as well. Catalonians feel like they have a separate history in many ways and that the monarchs and government do not represent their interests well. But I am no scholar in this, just the conversations I’ve hard that were fairly brief.

Thank you for the comment! An interesting topic. You are definitely right, nonetheless, the two comparisons are different in many ways.
