I don't think China is his last hope actually. I think he's run out of options and is staying afloat. The war has been disastrous, there really is no coming back from it. It's only a matter of time that the whole thing falls apart. The problem is that the next person will have all the institutional incentives to be a similar figure in Russian politics: to take advantage of the lack of checks and balances on the executive branch.
