Frankly, I very much understand that position. I think that the US particularly shouldn’t take this “holier than thou” attitude it’s been taking toward Russia.

But yes there are legal ways of reform and a referendum is one of them. The thing is, I sincerely doubt that Putin was acting on behalf of the Russian people alone. He was acting in his self-interest as well. We can only speculate. But his actions after Crimea testify to this.
