In a way, Brexit saved the European Union. There were many exit movements actually. Sweden, France, Italy, Greece (believe it or not), and a host of other EU nation-states had their own exit movements.

Most of them were not realistic proposals, of course. They had more to do with populist movements trying to take advantage of the anti-EU sentiment that was brewing as a result of the 2008 financial crisis and the disastrous handling of the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis.

But the Brits have it worse. They really regret the move. And there are four principal reasons they want to come back to the EU.

Let me explain.

First, I’ll discuss the reasons Brits regret their move from the EU. Then I’ll briefly look at the recent push from the majority of Brits who want a new referendum on rejoining the EU.

Could they rejoin the EU? But first, why has it not worked out according to the plans of its proponents, at the helm with Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, and Rishi Sunak?

There are four reasons:

  1. Economic
  2. Political
  3. Social, and
  4. Legal.

I’ll discuss each in turn.

1. Economy
