Bombing the Crimean Bridge — Are Ukrainians Responsible?

On Monday, 17th of July 2023, a bombing of the 19-km Crimea Bridge — the only direct link between the transport network of Russia and Crimea — reached news headlines everywherere. A significant development in a slow but steady counteroffensive.

But why?

In 2018, Vladimir Putin himself ceremoniously opened the bridge for road traffic, so it held some symbolic significance for the Russians.

But, more importantly, the Crimean Bridge was a crucial transport tool for fuel, food, and other products. Since Putin’s full-scale invasion, the bridge also served as an important gateway for Russia’s initial Kherson offensive in February and March, 2022.

Ukrainians have indeed claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Crimean Bridge (CNN). (Although, I’ve heard reports elsewhere that claim that Ukraine has not claimed responsibility just yet. Since the bombing happened today, I’ll have to update this post as more news comes out.)

This is the second bombing of the bridge since October 2022, when a fuel tanker exploded on it, causing a ruckus in the media space because Ukraine officially denied involvement.
