Absolutely. You are right. Saudi Arabia, for example, has a horrible track record for human rights.

But let me ask you this. The economic recession in Europe in the 1930s created fertile ground for various forms of extremism in Europe (& elsewhere). But in Europe Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and other extremists took serious advantage of the economics.

To what extent would we want to risk similar turmoil?

So, in a sense, we have to temporarily play the utilitarian card. But the question is how long and at what personal cost, of course.
