63 Journalists Killed in Gaza—How We Treat Ukrainians & Palestinians Differently

Lately, I have been in bewilderment watching what some have rightly dubbed a “normalization of horror” in Gaza.

We have to wonder why so many are standing by and ignoring obvious violations of international law. We have to wonder why so many are okay with 63 journalists being killed in the coverage of this war.

To put that into perspective, two journalists were killed covering the Ukraine war thus far in 2023. In total, 11 reporters have been killed since the start of the conflict in February 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Now, remember the necessary and justifiable public outcry for these journalists when they were killed. Where is that for the Palestinian journalists?

Is their value different?

Some are justifying their deaths and the killing of Palestinians as a “necessary evil” on Israel’s path to destroy Hamas.

In my view, we need not accept this necessary evil.

We can care about both Jewish and Palestinian suffering. We need not compare the two. We need not be polarized. Instead, we can see the humanity in everyone. It does not matter if they disagree with us, if they see the world differently, if they do not share our religion, ethnicity, or nationality. What matters is that they are human — and we are too, with all the complexity that comes with the human condition.
